FEATURE: Reinventing Music Education For The Future
Taking a revisionist attitude towards the future of music education is vital for making these programs more accessible and more beneficial to students. A recent online discussion has prompted instructors, parents and leaders of various music-oriented organizations to devise plans for enhancing access to music education and the way in which this subject is introduced and taught overall. In light of widespread funding cuts, the overall consensus is that there is a far greater need to support future leaders and to prioritize this area of learning.
Many feel that music lessons should not be elitist or reserved for only select groups of students, but should instead remain available to children of all learning and income levels. This accessibility should exist even for kids who are not able to manage well in general academic subjects, given the ability of music programs to enhance and enrich student learning experiences in a broad range of areas. The benefits of this type of learning remain consistent even when kids do not excel musically. Early exposure to these skills and to music theory overall can promote self-expression, determination, confidence and creativity among other things. Bearing these facts in mind, learning institutions, administrators and professionals within the music industry must make a concerted effort to reinvent the structure and the standards of music education for the 21st century.
Why Music Education Is Such A Vital Part Of Early Learning
Signing a child up for guitar lessons will not just expose this youngster to music theory or simply foster basic music skills. Recent studies have shown that learning music helps children to excel in other areas. The need to use sight, sound and a range of small muscles fosters coordination, the development of fine motor skills and greater levels of engagement. Music studies are believed to be one of the most effective forms of stimulation, especially during the formative years of life. In fact, studies have shown that music lessons can even promote language development. This is evidenced in the way that it affects the human brain. This type of learning fosters greater physical development of the left brain, which is directly connected to the processing of language. In this way, early exposure to music can actually lead to greater levels of language and social competence.

INTERVIEW: DJ & Producer Tom Parris talks to Vainzine
Tom Parris began his DJ career on pirate radio in London in 1989 and now has a DJ and production career spanning over 20 years. Head honcho of Silent Disco France, he currently lives in Paris, which is where we caught up with him.VZ: You are a British expat. How long have you been DJing in France?
TP: I first came over to DJ in France back in 1991.
VZ: You moved from the South of France to Paris. Where has the best best club scene and where do you prefer living & DJing?
TP: The South of France is amazing during the Summer. Basically everyone from Paris goes down there. The winter however is pretty quiet and Paris becomes the place to be. I've DJ'ed at incredible events at both places so it's difficult to say which is the best.
VZ: You also do Production. How long you been doing it and what is your favourite?
TP: For about 14 years. I released my first track in 1992. I think my favourite releases are Mutant Funk (Oblong Records), On The Top (End Recordings) and Nonsuch (Suerto Records).
VZ: Where is your favourite place to DJ in the World and the best party you played at?
TP: Impossible to say. There have been so many great times with so many special friends. I guess the events that stay close to my heart are probably the key first parties I went to back in the late 80's. Acid house and Raves back then were basically life changing experiences, at least they were for me.
VZ: We heard you were getting a records released in Brazil. Hows that going and any plans to DJ over there?
TP: I have just finished a remix and a new 2 track EP for Echo Deluxe Recordings who are based in Brazil. I'm hoping to go over there at some point and help promote the records.
VZ: Whats your favourite Album of all time?
TP: I've got three. 'Off The Wall' by Michael Jackson, 'Vital Idol' by Billy Idol and 'I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan.
VZ: What are your top 5 favourite tunes of all time?
TP: 'Love Will Find A Way' by Victor Romeo, 'Day In The Life' by Todd Terry, 'Ouchi Kochi' by Baby Ford, 'Let The Music Use You' by the Nightwriters and 'Planet Rock' by Africa Bambaata
VZ: Favourite track of 2012?
TP: 'Non Such' by ME!
VZ: Give us the low down on your new business Silent Disco France. What's happening and where can we catch one in Paris?
TP: My new company silentdisco.fr has taken off really well even though the concept is quite new in France. We have people calling every day asking for info and the system and we have events every week. Check out the website http://www.silentdisco.fr/ for party information.

INTERVIEW: Sophia Banoori talks to Vainzine
Fashion Journalist, consultant and designer Sophia Banoori (@SophiaBanoori) took some time out to talk to Vainzine about music, fashion and Paris. Sophia is a contributor at Vogue.fr & Haute Muse magazine.VZ: Tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do how you came to be interested in Fashion and work in Paris?
SB: I'm a young fashion journalist working with online publications such as Vogue.fr, Fashionwiredaily.com and Haute Muse magazine. I've always been a very creative person, when I was younger I spent all my time drawing and painted. Then in my early teens developed a certain fascination with fashion magazines, & the editorial work, the inspiration, all the far-fetched ideas and how it was always so incredibly put together by such gifted people. I grew up to have a very fond appreciation of Haute Couture, and applied to the prestigious Instituto Marangoni school in Paris, where I obtained my Fashion Design degree, and was selected to participate in the Graduate Fashion Week in Paris. You can view my fashion show and creations here:
Since I have been working as a fashion journalist, and keep designing on the side.
VZ: Are you Parisian or did you move here from another part of France or abroad?
SB: I am French/ American, and have been living in Paris for almost 4 years now. I previously lived in Kuwait for a long time.
VZ: What do you think of the Paris Music scene right now?
SB: I really appreciate the Parisian Music scene, there's always a lot happening, always new artists to discover. I really enjoy going to concerts, with a preference for indie/rock bands like Foster The People who I have seen several times in the last year. I love going to see smaller bands like Neon Indian and Owl City play, Arcade Fire, the XX.... and am always extremely interested to find discover the opening act, and usually look up their music as soon as I get home. I am going to see The Gossip tonight, and I've just purchased my tickets for the Jay-Z and Kanye Watch The Throne concert on the 1st of June. I'm very excited!
VZ: What, if any are your favourite venues to hear new music in Paris?
SB: My favorite places to check out new music would be The Bataclan, La Cigale & le Zebre de Belleville. I also discover new artists at a lot of the parties, fashion shows, and events during Paris Fashion Week, such as British sensation Azealia Banks, at the Chanel dinner last March, and she also performed at the Kanye West after-party. She's a great performer, and I have been listening to her music since.
VZ: What are your top 5 favourite albums of 2012 so far?
SB: They would have to be "Strangeland" by Keane, "Born to die" by Lana Del Rey, "Picture show" by Neon Trees, "California 37" by Train, "Stars & Stories" by The Fray. And I simply cannot wait for John Mayer's "Born and Raised" album!
VZ: What are you favourite singles or favourite song of 2012?
SB: "Somebody that I used to know" by Gotye feat Kimbra, "Paradise" by Coldplay, "Take Care" by Drake feat Rihanna.
VZ: What is your favourite song and/ or album of all time?
SB: Song would probably be "Wet Sand" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and favorite albums would have to be "The Dark side of the moon" by Pink Floyd, " "My beautiful dark twisted fantasy" by Kanye West, "Californication" and "Stadium Arcadium" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, "Heavier Things" by John Mayer.

FEATURE: Vainzine's Fave Five Albums of 2011
To those who said that 2011 was full of shit music, I say look harder and more importantly, listen harder. Use the internet, get peoples opinions and do some work. There was a hell of a lot of music churned out again this year and the bullshit filter had to be turned up to the max but there was also a lot of great, truly great music out there that you didn't really have to try that hard to find. I had great difficulty in narrowing down to five choices, but here they are. I've dropped in a few of those who didn't make the cut at the end. Justice - Audio, Video, Disco
What to say about this album? It split fans and critics alike. The back-draft on this was huge. I loved it, it's a masterpiece and massive step forward for a band that will hopefully be around for a long time to come.
Alex Turner - Submarine (Original Songs)
Original songs from the film Submarine, directed by Richard Ayoade. A super film that I loved and it's the song that make it what it is.
Puro Instinct - Headbangers In Ecstasy
Great band, great attitude, great music. This album is a work of art, well programmed and produced demands to be listened to from beginning to end every time. 'Stilyagi' just about my fave track.
Tycho - Dive
Dreamy beats, the cover artwork explains it all, sunset, sea, warm climes and good times. J'aime.
New Look - New Look
'Nap on the bow' is one of the tracks of the year and the album is another future classic that demands attention throughout. Can't wait for the next one.
Some honourable mentions go out to:
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Blood Orange - Coastal Grooves
Mr Oizo - Stade 2
Hollie Cook - Hollie Cook
2562 - Fever
Ancient Astronuats - Into Space And Time
Chali 2NA - Fish Market Part 2
Lucy - Wordplay For Working Bees
Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi
The Kills - Blood Pressures

FEATURE: Vainzine's Fave 5 Songs of 2011
So sometimes you love a track but not a whole album or it's on an EP or single or maybe you love one track even more than any of the others on a downright amazing LP and want to give it a special mention. Thats what this little piece is about. We just wanted to highlight some of our favourite individual tracks of 2011. Here are the top 5. New Look - Nap On The Bow
OMG words cannot describe this dreamy electronic ejaculate. Musical perfection, just about. A superb little death and worthy contender for song of the year.
Blood Orange - Bad Girls
If Prince was starting his career now then this would be his Purple Rain, but he's not relevant any more and thankfully Blood Orange is around to take the baton. This is a classic already.
Metronomy - We Broke Free
Made me cry the first time and still gives me shivers.
M83 - Midnight Sky
Hands in the air people, this was my 2011 anthem.
Kavinsky Feat. Lovefoxxx – Nightcall
This actually came out in 2010 but was re-ivigorated by it's inclusion on the awesome Drive OST. The opening scenes feature this superb track and help make this iconic hit film of 2011 hence the inclusion.

FEATURE: Fave Five Albums Of 2011: Tasha from Demain Magazine
Tasha Lovecity is Editor in Chief at Demain Magazine and well, she knows her music. Check out her list for the proof and don't forget to check out the superb Demain too.New Look - New Look
I’ve been waiting for a record from these guys for a long time. Something really endearing about the sparse beats and Sarah Ruba’s voice really reminds me of loads pop stars I loved as a kid in the 80s. ‘The Ballad’ is so beautiful I could almost cry.
The Strokes - Angles
The Stokes were largely panned for this record, as people felt they were not trying anything new. I remember when I was very young, I found it harder to take when my favourite band had a ‘new sound’ on every new record they put out and found it hard to adjust. It’s hard to deny the jovial and uplifting chorus of ‘so long, my friend’ on ‘Caffeinated Consciousness’ and the band’s signature droll lyrics on ‘Taken for a Fool’. This was an album for fans of The Strokes, and I love the fact it didn’t break any boundaries.
TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light
There is little this band can do wrong. My stand out track on this has to be ‘Will Do’, it’s like a gloriously haunting words of advice.
Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
A very emotional record full of different shades.. from the wonderfully chipper ‘Honey Bunny’ which kind of makes you want to run through the nearest field with all of your friends to play Frisbee to the Love is Like a River which could almost be a doo-wop song from the 60s. However, the song which fascinates me the most is ‘Vomit’; though it’s the most sparse track on the album, it’s probably the most enigmatic.
Cold War Kids - Mine is Yours
Up till now, Nathan Willett’s voice was always quote weathered and blues-y, which is great but on this record it’s quite smooth and poppy. The guitars and arrangement on the single ‘Finally Begin’ remind me of The Smiths, which I always find a good thing. A really uplifting album.

I've not sought out any new music this year but through the ether certain albums have permeated.
Star Wheel Press - Life Cycle of a Falling Bird
Beautiful, sincere album with stark honest production.
Washed Out - Within & Without
Effortlessly transcendental.
The Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion
Old ground but sounds very fresh.
Remember Remember - The Quickening
Mesmerizing piece of minimalism.
St Vincent - Strange Mercy
Always interesting.
Always interesting.

I used to work with Tel back in the day and he is a top bloke. He's currently Editor of Dazed & Confused’s global platform Satellite Voices, heading up creative special projects at Dazed Group. Music and arts journalist for Dazed & Confused, AnOtherMag, Nowness, URB, Staf. He's also one of the founders of the Earnest Endevours record label. You can check out their latest release by B. “I tried to stick with albums but there was a mixtape and a forthcoming EP (which with its seven-minute-long songs is nearly as long as an album). Half hourz of power.”
Kutmah - The New Error Vol 1
My most listened to mix of this year that kicked off 2011when we launched Kutmah’s “Two Soups & Honeybun” exhibition and party, back in January with HIT+RUN. Certified classic.
Borgata Boredom - Borgata Boredom
A scene-defining compilation of primal sludge noise from Rome’s east side emerging from the classic NO=FI label, who also run one of Rome’s best dive bars.
Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
Rampant experimental hip hop that transcends into visual art with both the awesome Dumb Eyes studio and the game changing filmmaking collective What Matters Most.
New Look - New Look
This is a celebratory album as two amazingly talented friends of mine finally released their awesome experimental pop debut on !K7 after years of other labels’ indecisive quagmire.
E.S.P - E.S.P
The EP is forthcoming but the dublab session and free first track are all over the internet. This cosmic LA psyche trio of Aska, Bobby Evans and Seiya Matsumiya are the future.

FEATURE: Fave Five Albums Of 2011: Eriin Dhesi from Vainzine
Merry Christmas peeps, tweeps, fb's, bloggers and net heads! Eriin is the newest member of team vainzine. She's done a few things already but this is her formal introduction, not that we're very formal 'round here but you get the picture. In here own words she's A 17 year old from Warwickshire, stuck in a woeful sixth form, surviving the middle class suburban landscape by attending gigs, listening to music, reading obscure things and watching Newsnight. All conglomerating in lots and lots of writing with almost there journalistic flair. Here's her top 5 for 2011.Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi
The most booming and captivating voice I've heard in a while. 'Jezebel', even though it's a cover, gives me goosebumps. She's like 2011's little Siouxsie Sioux.
Metronomy - The English Riviera
Pretty much nothing like their last indie nu rave stuff, which if regurgitated again in 2011 would've left them in that forgotten ditch of the Klaxons. (No matter how much the NME are bloody touting them). It's chilled out and quietly pretty. 'She Wants' is a god damn fave.
The Kills - Blood Pressures
Tbh, I wasn't sure how they would top their previous album cos I loved it so much. But even with the duo veering off with models and Jack White's side project (you can a bit off Mosshart's Dead weather-ness in there) but as a whole, the album still has the trademark sleaze and swagger just more refined.
Girls - father, son, holy ghost
It annoyed me when critics dumped them with Beach House and Waves on their debut album, when their work had tons more depth. This album takes a couple of listens to get into to realise how consistently strong it is. 'Vomit' is the most striking.
Nicola Roberts - Cinderellas eyes
*cheesy name barf* - even though it sounds like a poor man's early M.I.A that would be on repeat in New Look, she's the only girls aloud member to do a solo album that doesn't sound completely like a soulless profile booster i.e she's not twattin' around with 'messy fucking raindrops' like Cheryl the mofo Cole.

Little Dragon - Ritual Union
I like the vibe of the album and singer's voice.
Ivy - All Hours
After five years they finally released a new album. Catchy songs and lyrics.
Broken Bells - Broken Bells
Great album to listen while on the road (even though it was released in 2010).
Foster The People - Torches
Love "Pumped Up Kicks".
Bon Iver - Bon Iver

Michelle McDevitt is the president of Audible Treats, a boutique entertainment marketing and publicity company located in Brooklyn. Before Audible Treats, Michelle spun records as a college DJ at UC Santa Cruz for 3 years so she really, really knows her stuff. Here are her thoughts on her top 5 for 2011;Rustie - Glass Swords
I just got turned onto him by friends. He draws from so many influences to create a kaleidoscope of cinematic, synthy, dancey tunes.
The Naked and the Famous - Passive Me Aggressive You
"Young Blood" was the bait. That song might be my most listened to song this year. On constant repeat.
The Roots - undun
Solid album from one of the most consistently solid groups in hip hop. they're humble, hardworking, don't care about the hype machine, and make great music; they're heroes.
Pac Div - The Div
Love the breadth of material here. From heartfelt love jawns to fuck-you-pay-me anthems to party starters, to thanking supporters, to flossy big bassed anthems about picking up girls, the album covers it all. All over superb production.
Adele - 21
What more can be said about this album that hasn't already been said?

Johnny Showcase - Love is the Message
Amazing talent, brilliant songwriting and absolutely hilarious. Best album of the year. Any year.
AWOLNation - Megalithic Symphony
"Sail" is fantastic, but the album spans a ton of genres and is a great from start to finish.
Zach Stock - Until We Lay Alone
great songwriting, mixed & mastered by Bill Moriarity (Dr. Dog, The Swimmers). Go treat your ears and get this album.
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
I'm not sure words can express. Just listen.

FEATURE: Fave Five Albums Of 2011: Nico De Ceglia from BBC Radio 1/Hyena Stomp/Rebirth Records
London based Nico De Ceglia is a visionary Italian music geek who makes full use of all things music. Whether it’s as a DJ, producer, journalist, A&R, club promoter or radio show host, there isn’t much that he hasn’ttried his hand at.
He's been scouting and pre-selecting for Pete Tong's legendary show on BBC Radio 1 since 2001, his vital job is to keep him informed on the more alternative and underground sounds.
In the studio Nico's been busy with his partner in crime Severino (from Horse Meat Disco) under the name Hyena Stomp. The duo have remixed DJ Hell, The " Bears, Tevo Howard & Tracey Thorn as well having released own stuff on Rebirth Records. Check Nico out on Facebook and Soundcloud. Here's his thoughts on the top 5 albums of 2011;
"Lots of great music this year and it's difficult to squeeze it all in a
Top 5. These 5 albums are just some of those that have been in heavier
rotation from my speakers in the past 12 months. I would need at least a
Top 50."
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
"A journey through the spectres of England. I love PJ."
Tom Waits - Bad As Me
"7 years wait for another splendid album by this legend."
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome
"First of all I'm from Rome so I like the title. Second and most important
it has a perfect nostalgic cinematic touch."
Locussolus - Locussolus
"If there is a name that can manipulate disco and surrounding in a
superior way that's DJ Harvey."
Veronica Falls - Veronica Falls
"Gothic. Haunted. Melancholic. Punk-indie-pop."
