CONSUME: Creative ZiiSound D5 wireless music system review

So I have had this baby for a week now (I wanted to give it a thorough Vainzine workout before committing to saying anything prematurely) and thankfully my initial thoughts on this product have been confirmed. I never thought that we would get wireless speakers in such a compact package that sound so good. They also appear to be reliable having been used for at least 5 hours a day for the last week with no issues.

So firstly Creative claim that these speakers are amazingly simple to set up. I mean they should be since you don't need wires to connect them. Have a look at the video below. It really is that easy to get started. So they get a big thumbs up for ease of use. I initially connected them through my laptop which is bluetooth enable and it took no time at all. Then if you want to connect an ipod or i phone you just have to plug in the adapter that comes with the ZiiSound, plug it into the bottom of your ipod or iphone and use them wirelessly again. Amazing! And there is the added benefit of being able to use the ZiiSound as a docking / charge station should you want to.

Design wise I think Creative have totally done the right thing. They have gone for a modernist cubist design which is simple, unobtrusive and inoffensive. Some might say it's a little boring but I guess if you want to appeal to a broad market you don't want to be too adventurous. Personally I would have like to see a little more in the way of individual styling as they do look a bit like anyone could have made them but like I said they are simple and sometimes less is more. I think they are saying "we'll let the sound speak for itself" with this understated style. I do like the LED white lights going up the centre though. It's a nice touch.

So let's get down to the nitty gritty, the meat of the review and the proof of the pudding has to be in the sound quality. You may remember at the beginning of the article I said the speakers sound good. Well they actually sound a lot better than that. For the size of the unit the sound quality is quite outstanding. There is a built in woofer that provides a tough sturdy bass-line and the sound emanates from the top and front of the unit which helps to provide a balanced natural experience during playback. You can also crank them up quite a way without experiencing any failure in the woofer or static around the highs.

So all in all would I recommend this product to you? Well that depends on what you want and what you have in mind for a budget. The ZiiSound D5 is not a cheap product. It costs £279.99 so it's a serious investment. If you a looking for a top notch music system that can easily be transported and is more durable than pretty much everything else out there at the moment then this is a must, especially if you want a decent level of sound quality. If you are looking for a replacement for something with more oomph (like for example your hi-fi separates with external amp set up that you might be using in conjunction with your bluetooth enabled desktop for multimedia functionality such as gaming and movies) then maybe wait a while. The ZiiSound is a great little package and for music lovers who demand high quality sound it's a must have!
